About the campaign

"I ate the muesli"?
John Paul Young's misheard lyrics could be a trigger for a hearing check.

To help educate the public about hearing loss, we have enlisted the help of iconic Aussie recording artist John Paul Young along with the phenomenon of mondegreens — the misinterpretation of lyrics — to drive a new public education campaign to encourage all Australians to get their hearing checked if they are experiencing signs of hearing loss.

The campaign consists of a new online video (watch video above) where mondegreens are shown during John Paul Young's chart topping song I Hate the Music. The end result is in marked contrast to the original lyrical intent. The video acts as a humorous reminder to Australians who are experiencing hearing difficulties to get a hearing check and the importance of protecting your hearing.

John Paul Young knows too well what it is like to live with a level of hearing loss. He is one of many Australians who suffer from tinnitus, which can be described as "ringing in the ears" and can occur as a result of age-related hearing loss or exposure to loud noises. Speaking from his own experience with hearing loss, John says the campaign uses its unusual approach to bring attention back to the importance of maintaining good hearing health.

Posters will also be displayed in Australian Hearing centres and supplied to GPs and health providers across the country to promote the importance of getting a hearing check. To download the posters click here.

The campaign also serves as a reminder for people to protect their hearing when exposed to loud leisure noise such as at concerts, live music venues and nightclubs. To find out more, read our Binge Listening report.

About John Paul Young

Singer John Paul Young (or JPY to his fans) has had a music career spanning almost 40 years. A singer, songwriter, radio announcer and television personality, John goes about his work with attention to detail and a love of his craft. It all started in 1971 when Simon Napier Bell spotted the then John Young in a suburban Sydney band Elm Tree, and offered him the song Pasadena. The result was John's first top 10 single, peaking at No. 8 on the Australian Chart.
