Australian Hearing was proud to support the XV Australian Deaf Games (ADG) held on the Gold Coast from January 3 - 10.
Minister for Human Services, Senator Joe Ludwig, said the games were the national pinnacle of sports events for deaf and hard of hearing people.
"As the hearing industry leader, we want to take an active role in showing our support of the hearing impaired community," Senator Ludwig said. "A hearing loss affects everything from communicating socially and in the workplace, to participating in team sports'" he added.
First held in Sydney in 1964, the aim of the ADG is to promote the development of deaf and hard of hearing athletes. This year, over 750 athletes competed in athletics, beach volley ball, swimming, netball and squash, just to name a few.
Australian Hearing was the official sponsor of the Closing Ceremony at Dreamworld on January 10 2008. Anthea Green, Managing Director at Australian Hearing, presented a medal to the winner of the Netball Finals and was pleased to meet some of the athletes, many of whom are or have been clients of Australian Hearing.
Matthew Norman, client of Australian Hearing Mt Gravatt centre, competed in both soccer and volleyball. "To me [a hearing impairment] has never been an issue or barrier," he said.
Vanessa Ravlich, client of Australian Hearing Freemantle, plays for Western Australia and is in the only mother and daughter combination in a netball team at the Games. "We compete without our hearing aids and without hearing everything's more visual," said Vanessa.
